Assisted-Living
Home
To
accommodate the needs of their residents as
they age, the Winnifred Stewart House was added
in 1999 to the Residential Services provided
by the Winnifred Stewart Association, Edmonton,
Alberta.
This barrier-free, assisted-living home has
been designed with numerous special features
incorporated to meet the needs of individuals
with a developmental disability and dementia-related
effects. The house is designed as a duplex,
however there are hallways and doorways that
connect each side. This permits greater freedom
for the residents to wander, visit with each
other and their guests, with minimized opportunities
for mishap. The basement has been designed with
an additional bedroom and bathroom for sleep
staff and for any family who wish to stay at
the house overnight due to special circumstances.
The home is wheelchair accessible and is staffed
with persons trained to work with individuals
with developmental disabilities who are developing
dementia or Alzheimer's disease. There are sloping
sidewalks leading to entrances and doors and
to the patio. The grounds of the property are
landscaped to provide private areas for the
residents to relax and visit with family and
friends, as well as space to wander freely.
The design takes into account all features that
could impact persons dealing with loss of functional
abilities. The furnishings, appliances and interior
design have all been selected and adapted to
meet the needs of people with increased disorientation,
reduced visibility and mobility. These include:
- lighting:
designed to enhance structural cues for the
residents.
- flooring:
chosen to clearly define living spaces through
colour and design.
- specially-designed
bathtubs and showers: to accommodate reduced
mobility.
- strategically
located washrooms: to provide ease of access
with less confusion.
- closets:
have recessed/pocket doors so they are not
obvious points of interest.
- kitchen
equipment: electricity can be locked off to
prevent accidents.
- wall
and door colors: chosen to provide orientation
to location and space.
