Communication Boards/Booklets

Communication Boards are visual communication systems used by an individual to communicate by pointing to meaningful symbols or pictures. A communication booklet is a variation to communication boards using a three ring binder, wallet, or day planner in which the symbols are arranged. Usually printed word is combined with the symbol so communication partners can be sure of the communication intent.

It is helpful for the communication partner to say the word being pointed to, and to ensure accuracy of the message either by asking for a yes/no response (either by vocalization, head/eye movement, etc. - depending on the individual). A person using a communication board/booklet should have it with him/her at all times. Boards/Booklets may be placed on a wheelchair tray or carried in a purse or a pocket. Sometimes matching boards are placed on the wall of the living area or used as placemats in the dining room.
