Accessible
Housing Society
Established
in 1974, Accessible Housing
Society (AHS) is a Calgary-based
non-profit organization
and registered charity with
a mandate to create opportunities
for safe, affordable, barrier-free
housing for people experiencing
mobility problems.
A Housing Registry
documents housing needs,
evaluates accommodations
in Calgary and matches with
client need, and provides
liaison between clients
and landlords.
Housing and Personal
Care Services are provided
for physically disabled
clients at three sites in
Calgary.
The News & Views Newsletter
is available free of charge
and provides information
on: new materials in lending
library, funding updates,
new/recommended products
and ideas, answers to frequently
asked questions, practical
suggestions, etc.
The Accessible Housing Society
services specific to their
consulting services for
barrier-free housing include:
- Education
& Barrier-Free Design
Workshops The AHS
acts as a resource to
the community on design
modification of residential
accommodations. Organizations
wishing to promote or
learn about barrier-free
design are invited to
call the Society for workshops
or lectures tailored to
their specific requirements.
- Residential
Assessment & Design (RAD):
Independence is important
to everyone! Individuals
experiencing mobility
problems in their present
living environments or
anyone requiring design
assistance for barrier-free
accommodation can access
the specialized knowledge
and training of RAD's
team of Occupational Therapists
and Registered Architect.
Services include:
- assistance
to identify barriers
to independent living
in the residence,
recommending practical
solutions.
- client
assessments where
designs are personalized
to suit the individual's
specific requirements.
- existing
residences or new
home plans are assessed
and creative ideas
generated to cost-
effectively modify
the spaces to meet
the individual's needs.
Currently only provide
home visits in Calgary
(phone consultations
provided to everyone).
- customized
designs and computerized
drawings (CAD).
- information
on funding sources
and accessibility
products.
- The
ACT Library offers
information on barrier-free
design, building standards
and funding. Persons from
outside of the Calgary
area looking for specific
information will be referred
to the librarian. The
ACT Library may be accessed
