Universal
Access Consulting
Is
a Saskatchewan based
consulting firm which
specializes in "Universal
Design" which simply
means: designing
to accommodate the greatest
range of the population
possible. Universal
design aims to make
environments easier
for all people to use
i.e. Children, shorter
and/or taller than average
people, aging people,
people with disabilities
and people who speak
languages other than
English. Universal design
features when incorporated
into facilities allow
equal access to all
of the environment's
features.
Universal
Access Consulting's
main services include:
- 'Universal
Access' audits:
these in depth investigations
of businesses, facilities,
sports arenas, office
buildings, etc. look
at every aspect of
the environment and
develop recommendations
to make the places
more user friendly
for everybody. Two
types of recommendations
may be made:
- Building
Code enforceable
recommendations
are based on existing
building code
regulations and
advise the property
owner where their
facility is sub-code
and should have
improvements.
- Universal
Design recommendations
takes the building
code requirements
one step further,
accommodating
many more people.
Although these
features are unenforceable
by law, the added
convenience, accessibility
and increased
usability are
well worth the
added costs.
- In-home
assessments: for
people who are looking
for ideas to make
their homes more accessible
to those who live
there. Every activity
of daily living is
considered in consultation
with the individual
and health care professionals
in making our recommendations.
- Training
Seminars: are
custom designed for
trades-people or custodians
who build, renovate,
or care for any building
or facility. These
seminars include information
such as: theory of
Universal; Design,
facilitation of Universal
Design and a compact
Universal Design Reference
Guide which provides
handy, at a glimpse
solution for almost
any Universal Design
problem that may be
encountered on the
job.
- Disability
Awareness Training:
seminars are designed
to introduce employees
to the basics of disability
awareness. Topics
include: terms of
respect, disability
specific information,
and information on
why inclusion of disable
people in society
is smart business.
Recommendations
are based on 24 years
of combined experience
in the disability field,
knowledge gained through
focus groups comprised
of people with disabilities,
a Universal Design graduate
certificate from the
University of Manitoba
Faculty of Architecture's
Universal Design course,
and through hours of
research.
Services are available
throughout the province
of Saskatchewan. Fees
are based on a number
of factors, estimates
are provided. Grants
which may be available
to offset the costs
of improvements are
identified in the final
report. Messages left
on the answering machine
will be returned the
next business day.
