Sensory
Stimulation
Boxes/Kits/Bags
Sensory
stimulation
boxes/kits/bags
take many
forms and
shapes.
You can
purchase
pre-assembled
kits or
create your
own. They
can be put
together
for an individual
(about the
person's
life history)
or for a
group (theme).
Utilize
the box/kit/bag
for sensory
stimulation
and reminiscence
for a small
group (2-6
people).
What
to use to
hold all
your items?
This depends
on the theme.
An easy
storage
container
is a bag.
A shoe box
is o.k.
if it will
hold all
you items.
A larger
box, and
the box
doesn't
have to
be square
in shape,
can also
be used.
. . . Ease
of transportation
is also
important
as you have
to able
to carry
the items
from one
place to
another.
What
to put in
the kit?
This depends
on the theme.
Make sure
you have
something
for each
of the five
senses.
Brainstorm!
As an example,
for a winter
theme think
of snow,
cold, warmth
of a fire,
the holiday
season,
winter sporting
activities,
etc. . .
. then pick
items that
correspond
to those
thoughts.
Some items
you may
include:
- instant
hot chocolate
- mittens
- a
Christmas
Angel
- decorated
Christmas
Box
- cold
pack (ice
pack to
put in
the fridge)
- a
small
miniature
sled
- paper
snow flake
- cinnamon
sticks
- flannel
nightie
- jar
of mincemeat
- cassette
tape of
Christmas
music
- skate,
cross
country
ski
- pine
scented
candles
You
will need
to record
the sensory
responses
of each
participant.
To do this
make up
a sensory
participation
sheet. List
all the
senses and
the items
that correspond
to each
of the senses.
Make a note
of the responses
of the individuals
who participate.
