How to Start A Walking Club

Walking Clubs have become very popular.
The following information has been developed to assist in starting a walking club and allow for flexibility of use. You may wish to use them in different ways and may need to adapt them to suit the needs of the groups participants. Here are some ideas.

Help your group set a goal
Set a goal you think is reasonable for you and your group to achieve. For example, you may decide to walk for 20 minutes three times a week or for 20 minutes or more each day.

Post a wall chart in a visible and accessible place
Write the names, attach a photo, or have group members write their names in the squares provided on the chart. An example of a wall chart would include a column for walkers names/pictures down the side and columns for the specific days of the month, days of the week, distance, etc. and a column for totals

Log activities daily or as they occur
Begin recording on the day you begin, it does not have to be the first day of the week or month.

Equivalent activities
Decide if you are going to recognize other physical activities besides walking. You may wish to recognize an equal number of minutes of other activities like cycling, swimming, or gardening.

Recording
You may choose to record activities in a variety of ways:

  • actual minutes of walking.
  • kilometres walked.
  • participation.
  • The last column is for totals. In this column you may wish to record the numbers of minutes, kilometres or days, group members have participated.

Recognizing the achievements of group member
You may want to give out certificates, with the persons name, date and signed by the leader, or other important person.

Variations on the theme
Want to add excitement to the program? Go ahead. The possibilities are unlimited.

  • how about walking to Vancouver? or across Canada?, etc.
  • offer daily prizes for the greatest minutes or kilometres walked.
  • have prizes for the most outrageous or oldest sneakers.
  • involve the community, families, neighbours.
  • recognize the 'Walker of the Week/Month.
