Everybody's Business:
Self Employment Issues and Opportunities for People with a Disability

What are the issues surrounding self-employment as it applies to persons with varying types of disabilities? Here are some success stories that tell you what you need to know about everything from principles of community economic development as a driving force behind self-employment to decision making, to different aspects of running a small business.
Everybody's Business is the result of a one-year 'Innovations' project funded by Human Resource Development Canada. The project was undertaken to explore opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to become self-employed. The Bay St George Community Employment Corporation, Newfoundland and Project Work, Toronto, Ontario shared their stories about persons with intellectual disabilities being supported to start, own and control their own businesses.
Everybody's Business is intended to stimulate discussion and thought amongst families, employment agencies, support networks, and individuals with disabilities around the possibilities for self-employment. It is meant to challenge traditional thinking about the kinds of employment that people with intellectual disabilities are usually steered towards. It is meant to open some minds, and some doors.
