Exercise and Nutrition Health Education Curriculum for Adults with Developmental Disabilities
by T. Heller, B.A. Marks, & S.H. Ailey

This health behaviour curriculum aims to improve the fitness and health of adults with developmental disabilities. The exercise program includes exercise, nutrition and health education components. The goals of the program are to:

  1. improve fitness;
  2. increase knowledge about healthy lifestyles; and
  3. teach family, staff, and friends how to support participants to achieve these goals; while increasing the participant's self-efficacy in making choices and attaining personal goals.

The curriculum was developed as a 12-week program with three 1-hour sessions per week to compliment exercise activity, and nutrition and cooking classes. It can also be used on a "stand alone" basis and its design enables trainers to customize the program and workbooks for each individual. The curriculum includes a trainer's guide, handouts for the trainee's workbooks and assessment tools to evaluate participants progress.

The guide book includes color photos and drawing; helpful hints; examples of a newsletter for each of the 12 weeks; instructor scripts; and much more. A CD with participant handouts and worksheets is available.
