CIRCLESŪ
With
CIRCLES I, CIRCLES
II and CIRCLES III,
you are provided with
the materials to teach
social/sexual boundaries
to persons with developmental
disabilities. Foundations
for appropriate social/sexual
behaviour, strategies
for handling sexual
exploitation and protection
against communicable
diseases are all included
in the CIRCLES set.
CIRCLESŪ
I: Intimacy & Relationships
- various relationships
are described and
color coded to illustrate
appropriate behaviour
with strangers, children,
friends, family and
self.
Part
1: Social Distance
- helps the learner
"see" social and
sexual distance.
The 11 videos explain
the relationship
between the level
of intimacy between
people and the way
they TOUCH, TALK
to and TRUST each
other. You'll teach
individuals "relationship
boundaries" and
relationship-specific
behaviours, e.g.,
its okay to hug
your mother, it's
not okay to hug
the mail carrier.
Part 2: Relationship
Building - demonstrate
how intimacy levels
change as relationships
change. The 6 video
programs emphasize
the role of mutual
choice among individuals
when deciding what
level of intimacy
will characterize
a relationship.
This concept is
critical for protecting
individuals from
exploitation.
CIRCLESŪ II: Stop
Abuse - teaches
individuals how to
recognize and avoid
sexually threatening
or abusive situations
through real-life
demonstrations with
step-by-step lessons
and strategies.
Part
1: Recognizing and
Reacting to Sexual
Exploitation
- encourages individuals
to be assertive.
This program illustrates
how to recognize
and react to sexual
exploitation occurring
in close relationships
with dates, close
friends and relatives.
It teaches individuals
that they do not
have to participate
in physical contact
that does not feel
good to them.
Part 2: Learning
Appropriate Protective
Behaviours -
illustrates the
potential for sexual
abuse from acquaintances
and strangers. Individuals
will learn how to
identify inappropriate
behaviour and initiate
protective measures
to cope with unwanted
advances.
CIRCLESŪ III: AIDS:
Safer Ways - teaches
individuals how to
avoid and treat communicable
diseases and how to
protect against AIDS
and other sexually
transmitted diseases.
Part
1: Communicable
Diseases and Casual
Contact - illustrates
what casual contact
is and the steps
that can be taken
to lessen the chances
of catching a communicable
disease. Four dramatized
sequences model
good health habits
and provide the
necessary readiness
for the sensitive
information presented
in
Part 2. Part 2:
STDs, AIDS and Intimate
Contact - explains
the difference between
"casual" and "intimate"
contact. This part
promotes positive
decision-making,
including abstinence,
to best avoid STDs
and AIDS. Real-life
dramatic sequences
present young people
making decisions
that help them stay
healthy. Dispels
myths regarding
transmission of
diseases and clearly
illustrates risk
factors. You will
also receive a general
and explicit version
of "How AIDS and
STDs are Contracted".
You decide which
level is most appropriate
for your group/community.
These programs were
designed for middle
school to adult age
groups.
