WHAT NEXT? What to do about Sexual Assault

WHAT NEXT? has been developed in partnership by Community Living Algoma, Sexual Assault Care Centre, Sault Area Hospitals, Shaw Cable, Harmony Productions, and Sault Ste. Marie Police Services through a grant received from Human Resources Development Canada.
People with a developmental disability are more likely to be victimized than the average person. Through this video the partners hope that people with a development disabilities will learn that sexual abuse and sexual assault are wrong and not their fault. The video stresses that it is important to remember to tell someone you trust if you have been sexually assaulted so that they can help. What Next? was developed to be used as a tool to inform people with developmental disabilities about what occurs if you were assaulted and reported it.
The video's main character Janice has recently been assaulted. The video follows her through her initial disclosure to her roommate who encourages and assists her to call her worker; the worker accompanying Janice to the Sexual Assalt Care Centre to meet with the nurse who explains her rights and options, and then accompanies her to the hospital where Janice restates what could occur in the examination; to her meeting with the Sexual Assault Counsellor and finally as a result of her decision to protect her rights, Janice's meeting with the Police Officer.

Compassion, caring and respect for Janice, the victim are shown throughout the video as well, her rights as the victim to control what is happening to her are emphasized. The video concludes with information specific to Community Living Algoma. It is possible to have the video re-dubbed with information pertinent to your area, or stopping the video at that point and providing your specific information would be solutions worth considering as this video very effectively shows WHATS NEXT!
