Self-Determination/Advocacy . . .

Educational Conference facilitated annually by the Hope Centre Inc., the conferences are designed to enhance the ability of individuals with significant disabilities, and their circle of friends, to make educated choices through practical experiences featuring a network of community resources.

Making Choices As We Age: A Peer Training Program is a curriculum for training persons with disabilities and their co-trainers how to teach other adults with developmental disabilities about: choice making, rights and responsibilities, how to make healthy choices, and about things to do in their free time.

Right On was developed by the self-advocates of Essex County Community Living. The Bill of Rights and the Right On! video were developed as a tool to help people understand their rights, empower people in making decisions which affect their lives and to have an impact on the manner in which opportunities are provided through community living.

School to Life Transition Handbook - 5 Steps to Self Advocacy is a step-by-step planning guide written in plain language. Uses a "Person-Centered Planning Approach to focus on the individual. Checklists, planning and meeting guides, etc. are included.

Supporting Self Determination - Strategies for Direct Support Staff provides information to direct support staff on the concept and practices of promoting self-determination. Viewers learn six strategies for promoting opportunities for self-determination and discuss the challenges for staff to respond in a manner that promotes self-determination.

The Rights Stuff demonstrates how agencies can develop and use of bill of rights written by those who receive service.

Waddie Welcome - A Man Who Cannot Be Denied is the story of Waddie Welcome. After the death of his only relative Waddie is placed in a nursing home in a community many miles away from his home. The video shows how "person centered planning" and "circle of friends" philosophies assisted to achieve Mr. Welcome's goal to return to his friends and community.
