TALL
TALES:
Self
Concept and People with Developmental
Disabilities
a lecture by Dave Hingsburger
Feeling
good about yourself should be the
end goal of all therapy. This lecture
looks at the interactions and how
they affect people with developmental
disabilities. A positive approach
means more than a giving reinforcement,
it means the giving of respect,
of recognition and responsibility.
We have the opportunity to increase
a feeling of self-worth in ourselves
and others with almost every interaction.
This lecture, recorded in front
of a live audience, is full of humour
and wisdom but offers the listener
a real challenge.
Mr.
Hingsburger encourages the audience
to look at life from the perspective
of a person with a disability
- "see the world through the eyes
of the person" He suggests that
the job of people in human services
is to prepare people for life
and that too often we are more
concern with the quantity of skill
rather than the quality of life.
He recounts his own personal experiences
from his years of work with people
with disabilities and through
his own life experiences, the
ways in which service providers'/peoples'
actions affect the self concept
of the individual. Through the
introduction of 8 points and a
subsequent series of questions
specific to planning for an individual
Mr. Hingsburger guides the listeners
towards the concept that we need
to REINFORCE the individuals
we work with. That the only goal
of those working in human services
should be 'to make the person
stronger'. He concludes with a
question that we should ask ourselves
a the end of everyday we work.
"Are the people I worked with
stronger in who they are because
I was here today?" If our
answer is "no" he suggests that
we need to re-evaluate our time.
TALL TALES provides the listeners
with the tools to do that self-evaluating.
