Walking
Works
Walking Works was produced by the National Walking Campaign for Older
Adults. The campaign promotes walking and was initiated because most
adults in Canada said that they prefer walking as a physical activity.
Walking . . . adds Quality to Life.
The Walking Works Brochure was written for the person considering
walking, and includes the benefits of walking, safety tips, how to monitor
heart rate, stretching techniques, and a 10-week sample walking program.
The Walking Works Leaders Manual was designed to give the leader
ideas and suggestions for setting up a walking program. The manual can
be used as a guide in designing your own walking program or you can
share the information with your friends and form a community walking
club.
The "Walking Works" Leaders Manual has been developed to assist leaders
help people get started on the road to improving their health and well-being
through walking.
The manual includes:
- Tips for organizing a walking program - from Sunday walks in the
country to indoor walking programs.
- A list of safety tips - from checking your heart rate to proper
nutrition and care of feet.
- Suggestions on starting your personal walking program - from a sample
4 week program to enhance exercise walking and how to stay motivated.
- How to promote a walking program - specific ideas on working with
the media are highlighted.
- A list of resources and contacts.
