The following are included to assist in the areas of "Active Living". The resources, books, videos, . . . may need to be used as teaching guides for the staff/support workers. i.e. An individual with a developmental disability may be unable to follow or use an exercise video, but the video may be an excellent teaching tool for the leader, who will then be able to take the information and present it in a way that meets the needs of the individual (s).
Exercise and Nutrition Health Education Curriculum for Adults with Developmental Disabilities aims to improve the fitness and health of adults with developmental disabilities. It helps individuals understand the benefits of health promotion behaviours related to exercise and nutrition, develop personalized exercise and nutrition goals, etc. Feeling Fit features adults with developmental disabilities performing professionally designed low impact aerobics. Gentle Tai Chi -Meditation in Motion is an easy to learn video designed for people of all ages. A seated version of the Gentle Tai Chi movements is demonstrated. How to Start a Walking Club provides basic information on starting a walking club, and some ideas to enhance the club. Parachutes encourage participation by everyone in the session. Parachutes are available in a many different sizes and with varying numbers of handles. Information on two styles and an accessory pack are included. Parachute Activities for Senior Adults activities specifically designed for the senior adult. The cassette and suggestion for activities are for easy-to-do routines. The audio-cassette recording enables the instructor to set the speed and level of difficulty for each activity. Parachutes Games Video a 28 minute video which contains 15 different physical group games. Positive Steps - Fall Prevention and Exercise Program consists of a handbook and an accompanying video which allows you to look at individual's fall risk and gives the tools needed to lower the risk. Includes easy exercises for maintaining strength, balance, and mobility. Recreation for Older Adults: Individual and Group Activities provides low-cost, client-intensive recreation programming ideas for older adults, regardless of the level at which they are able to function. Extensive section on exercise and the older adult in the chapter called "Move It of Lose It". Streamers & Ribbons may be used to enhance movement education to increase range of motion, balance, eye-hand coordination, etc. Two different types of equipment are listed. Streamer Ribbon Activities combines modern, folk, and soul music with the fun and beauty of flowing streamers and ribbons. A manual and a CD/cassette are included. T'ai Chi - Beginner's Level provides an informative, easy-to-understand introduction to the art and practice of T'ai Chi. This 60 minute video features "Reverse View" which allows the viewer to see all movements, front and back . Walking provides basic information on: why walking, how to get started, safety tips, walking tips, how to get the most benefit out of walking, and more. Walking Works was produced by the National Walking Campaign and includes a brochure outlining the benefits of walking, safety tips, etc.; and a Leaders Manual designed to provide ideas and suggestions for setting up a walking club.
