Person-Centered Planning for Later Life - A Curriculum for Adults with Mental Retardation

This curriculum is designed to empower older adults with cognitive disabilities to make choices and decisions about their future. Concrete skills in making choices and developing goals are taught in 17 classroom lessons and three field trips. Opportunities are provided for individuals to experience available options and make some decisions about their own lives.

Ultimately, the intent of this curriculum is for individuals to develop and attain their desired goals. The benefits of this program have been empirically documented in research studies.

Major Content Areas:

  • Making choices, knowing your rights and responsibilities,
  • Remaining as healthy as possible as we grow older,
  • Expanding free time options,
  • Working and retiring (including volunteering),
  • Developing friendships and support networks,
  • Setting goals and participating in planning meetings.

Concepts are taught through:

  • Concrete classroom opportunities to make and evaluate choices,
  • Concrete classroom experiences of available options,
  • Frequent opportunities to talk about personal preferences and choices,
  • Frequent opportunities to set and evaluate personal goals,
  • Weekly assignment to practice classroom concepts in everyday environments.

The Training Package includes:

  • Curriculum of 17 lessons and guidelines for 3 field trips,
  • Instructor's Guide on how to plan and teach the course,
  • Graphic Packet for illustrating concepts taught in the curriculum,
  • Materials for weekly assignments for trainees,
  • Student Notebook, with written and pictorial materials for each lesson,
  • Role of the Trainee's Support Person.
