PLANNING . . . to have a life.

Person-Centred Planning . . . This book on individualized planning is intended primarily for people who have a role in supporting someone with a disability. No one has total control over the events of their life, but for everyone, planning helps to give us a compass on our life journey. When a person's life circumstances, which may include a disability, make them vulnerable to control by others, their journey may be very restricted. For them planning - that they control, and/or are involved in - is critical to having a rich and meaningful life, versus simply existing.|
There are some who say that planning is a controlling, even oppressive, activity imposed on people who are prisoners of service systems. To be sure, some of what has happened to them in the name of planning may have been more harmful than helpful, but the author maintains that planning is a normal everyday activity in which all people engage - with more or less skill and success.
Contemporary approaches . . . This book emphasizes individualization and contemporary approaches to planning using life stories, personal narratives and portfolios. It shows how these can be combined to meet a person's unique needs in any setting - within or outside a support system - in order to promote quality of life. A new "voice" speaks directly to readers who are encouraged to apply planning principles to their own lives, sensitizing them to the power and pitfalls related to planning with others.
This innovative guide uses language that is jargon-free, describing the essential universal features of planning -

  • Understanding
  • Deciding
  • Doing
  • Reviewing
